People drink tea to unwind as a sizzling cup of tea is refreshing. Still, too much tea is not advisable as it’s harmful to health. Is tea harmful, could be determined by how much amount of tea you drink in a given day.
Chinese have possibly been drinking tea in some form or the other since the 4th century AD and bearing in mind that wild tea grew in several parts of Assam (India), it’s not true that drinking tea in India too is as old as in China.
The raw material for manufacturing tea generally consists of two young leaves and an unopened leaf bud, the famous “two leaves and a bud” formula; however, plucking of longer shoots containing three or even four leaves is not uncommon. The freshly harvested tea shoots could be processed into various kinds of tea, namely black tea, green tea, oolong tea and instant tea.
There is barely any drink that is not a food, in terms of calories it provides, tea is no exception. A cup of tea, comprising 2 tbsp of milk and a tsp of sugar yield about 40 calories. Milk contains casein, which makes the tannin in the tea inexplicable and removes some of its astringency (acidic effect). Apart from the sugar and milk generally added, the tea mixture contains minor quantities of vitamins and minerals, but no major quantities of extractable proteins, carbohydrates or fats.
Tea is quite rich in most of the B group vitamins. Besides this, it’s also a good source of vitamin E and K and Beta carotene (changes into vitamin A into our body). Tea contains traces of minerals like fluoride, copper and manganese too with fluoride helping in avoiding cavities in the teeth.
Is tea harmful or not can be determined by the following points which state why you should avoid drinking excessive tea. You must avoid drinking too much tea as:
- Tea contains tanine, a toxic element which disturbs the digestion process as the secretion of juices is affected by it. Tanine affects the water content in the body due to which the skin becomes rough and fragile.
- It contains caffeine, which is harmful for health. Tea affects the nervous system and keeps an individual awake at night and could also raise blood pressure. Too much caffeine could also cause poor concentration, tetchiness and nervousness.
- Those who are inclined to frequent attacks of indigestion and stomach ulcers must avoid too much of green tea as it could worsen the condition.
- Excessive drinking of tea leads to excessive passing of urine, but the toxic element are not gotten rid of. Urine gets solidified forming uric acid that gets deposited in joints resulting in arthritis and gout.
- Excessive tea causes overexcitement, insomnia, sore throat, blood impurity as well as paralysis. It’s also bad for teeth and gums get weakened.
Is tea harmful or not is for you to decide. You can avoid its harmful effects by limiting the intake as anything in moderation is good and tea is no exception to this.
