Trauma is a Greek world referred to ‘a wound’. It is basically any injury, which is physically or emotionally inflicted. Trauma is a serious bodily injury, wound, or shock associated with trauma medicine practiced in emergency rooms. In psychiatry, trauma is emotionally distressful, painful, or shocking situation. Now let us focus on how to overcome trauma?
How to Overcome Trauma?
When the person is involved in an accident or natural disaster, or is a victim of childhood abuse, the resulting trauma is same in all these cases. To overcome trauma, it is very important to analyze the situation or traumatic incidents.
Symptoms of Trauma
· Persistently re-experiencing the events like flashbacks, nightmares etc.
· Avoidance to the people, places or activities that activate the memories of incidence.
· Hyper arousal i.e. feeling on edge, jumpiness, irritability
All these things are treated as a part of overcoming traumatic situation.
Steps to Overcome Trauma
1. Identify that your symptoms are normally occurring reactions to the abnormal circumstances. Although one may feel like out of control in reality, he/she is experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms.
2. Openly communicate about your thoughts, feeling or reactions to the people you trust. Keep talking about it until you feel like it.
3. Try to do things that help to create a feeling of safety and calmness in your immediate environment. Try to develop a discipline for meditation or listening to comforting music.
4. Try to resume your normal behavior and routine work of your life. Traumatic events have the ability to make your life full of chaos. So sooner you restart your routines, the more normal life you will feel.
5. As one is into recovery process after the specific physical and psychological accident, give yourself good rest, nutrition and exercise.
6. Try to take a positive action. Write everyday in your dairy. Start taking action on your behalf.
7. Do get aware of your emotional triggers and try to become skilled at coping with them creatively. It is possible that you may have flashback cope experiencing an emotional trigger and try to connect in positive self-talk.
8. Learn to find a deeper meaning in what happened to you. Record these insights in your dairy or voice them.
9. To overcome trauma, you can also take psychotherapy, from certified EMDR practitioner who specializes in trauma conditions. It is found to be very helpful for people.
10. Try to be patient with yourself. Keep in mind that healing takes some time. Your recovery process itself will have its ups and downs.
Always keep in mind that your traumatic experience makes you a stronger and wiser person. A number of factors are responsible for fast overcoming of trauma. These are as follows:
- Patient’s ability to cope with stress in a healthy manner
- Good problem-solving skills
- Having social support
- Being connected with others
- Spirituality
- Helping others
- Finding positive meaning
