Respiratory system diseases and disorders are among the top three causes of death all over the world. Fresh air which is rich in oxygen is a thing of the past with the increase in pollution. You are continuously inhaling poisonous gases regardless of whether you are at home or outside. Very soon fatality due to respiratory diseases would rank first on the list with the rate at which the air is getting polluted.
Common Respiratory System Diseases
Some of the common respiratory diseases that an individual generally suffers from are: chronic bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, acute bronchitis, etc.
Chronic Bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Emphysema
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease usually means emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In chronic bronchitis, there is a swelling and scarring of the main air passages known as the bronchial tubes and in the latter, the lung losses it’s suppleness and there is an enduring harm to the air sac’s walls. This prevents the air from flowing freely. Passive smoking, air pollution, hereditary, under treated asthma, etc. are some of the other causes of COPD.
An individual suffering from COPD generally shows chronic cough, shortness of breath and also production of chronic mucus.
Asthma
Fatality due to respiratory diseases includes asthma as one of the major reasons. People who face breathing problems due to asthma attack are painful to watch. Individuals with this disease have a hypersensitive respiratory system airway, which constricts at times, hence lessening the flow of air which in turn causes problems to breathe appropriately. When a person has an asthma attack, wheezing takes place since the air is forced to pass through smaller air passages.
Tobacco smoke, air pollution, pollens from flowers, release from factories, cold air, chemicals and even certain medications are the causes of asthma. However, you don’t have to worry as both are manageable and treatable.
Influenza
This disease is generally caused by the influenza virus and it’s the most serious of all respiratory diseases. This disease is highly infectious and could spread through air or through contact.
Sore throat, runny nose, body aches, cough, diarrhea, nausea, fevers and chills and upper respiratory congestion are some of the symptoms of influenza.
Lung Cancer
This is the worst of all the respiratory system diseases. At least 150,000 cases of lung cancer have been reported and treated in the year 2001 alone in the US. Smoking cigarette, both active and passive is the main cause of this disease. Lung cancer kills more individuals than any other type of cancer.
Tuberculosis
It’s a common and lethal respiratory system disease which is generally caused by mycobacterium. Here, the lungs are affected but it could also affect the other parts of the body. It could spread through air like common cold.
Fever, chronic cough with blood tinged sputum; night sweats and weight loss are some of the common symptoms of TB.
This goes to show that fatality due to respiratory diseases are immense. However, if you are a bit cautious and take essential precautions, you could keep these diseases away.
