Eye veins problems are also known as retinal vein occlusion. It is a commonly known retinal vascular disease in middle-aged or older individuals. Eye vein problems occur when the vein providing outflow of blood from vasculature present in the eye gets blocked.
Important Aspects of Eye Veins Problems
- We all know that retina of the eye is nourished and cleansed by a group of small blood vessels which are referred as the retinal arteries or the retinal veins.
- In old people, these fine vessels sometimes become blocked with a blood clot or fatty deposit causing eye vein problem.
- The symptom of each problem depends on the type of blood vessel blocked. If in case an artery is blocked, this can lead to stopped functioning of retina which can cause blindness.
- When the blood vein is getting blocked, it may rupture. This results in spilling of blood and fluid into the vitreous humor. This can lead to blurry and cloudy vision over a few hours.
- Blockage of a retinal artery is known to be an emergency, but retinal vein blockage is less frightful as compared to the artery.
- Vein blockage takes place in younger people and may remain undetectable. As a result, regular eye examinations are essential for this case to prevent further damage.
- Sometimes, branch retinal vein occlusion can lead to proliferation of new vessels on the retina and the optic disk which results into vitreous hemorrhage followed by retinal detachment.
Causes of Eye Vein Problems
There are many indirect causes of eye veins problems that can lead to serious defects. There causes are listed as below:
· Age
· Hypertension
· Atherosclerotic vascular disease
· Diabetes mellitus
· Cigarette smoking
· Hyperlipidemia i.e. lipids in blood
· Vasculitis i.e. redness of blood vessel
· Hyperviscosity syndromes
· Chronic glaucoma
Diagnosis of Eye Veins Problems
· The diagnosis of eye veins problem takes place with the help of fundoscopic discovery of retinal vein dilation.
· This is identified as retinal hemorrhages and presence of cotton-wool spots
· Along with this, the pathology test also provides additional analysis of central retinal vein, a branch retinal vein as well as a hemicentral vein.
· Hemicentral retinal vein problem occurs when one-half of the central retinal veins become occluded in the anterior part of optic nerve of the eye.
· It can also be distinguished clinically with the help of diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases associated with it.
Treatment of Eye Vein Problems
· Doctors can recommend medications which contain steroids, streptokinase, anticoagulants, plasma expanders and aspirin.
· Along with this, the latest technique of plasminogen activators is also known to be a useful treatment of retinal vein thrombosis.
· You can also carry out laser surgery which is a popularly used option for curing the eye vein problems. During the surgery, a beam of light is focused on the affected area to remove those damaged veins.
Eye vein problems can be treated according to the intensity of these problems. The main aim of the treatment is to prevent complications.
