Epilepsy is a serious brain disorder which involves spontaneous seizures. Seizures i.e. fits, convulsions, etc. are basically episodes of disturbed brain function causing changed behavior. The main cause for epilepsy in kids is unusually energized electrical signals in the brain. While dealing with epilepsy in kids, you have to make sure about the following aspects:

Aspects of Epilepsy in Kids

  1. Epilepsy has an effect on your child's behavior. Keep in mind that most of your child’s behavior problems are directly related to the way you react to the conclusion of epilepsy. You have to be strong and positive to deal with your kid normally.
  2. Like many parents, you feel shocked and/or overwhelmed in the initial stages. While dealing with your kid, please don’t feel guilty or angry. This can cause depression, and situation becomes even more complicated to deal with.
  3. You should understand that your parenting directly reflects in your child's self-concept.
  4. You can easily help your child by reaching a step of acceptance. Only with this, you can work to help your child gain seizure control.

As parents’ reactions directly affect children, try to control your emotion in front of the child. Other people in the society also can control your growing child's emotional development, so give the idea to them. There are some important people that can affect your child’s health problem and behavior. They are:

  1. Teachers
  2. Playmates
  3. Other family members

Support and Effective Discipline of Epilepsy Kids

  1. Dealing with epilepsy in kids means treating your child, and not just the seizures.
  2. Although medication or surgery cures the seizures, the problem of language, learning, and behavior may appear in your child.
  3. If you stress out the child by scolding too much, this can result in seizure.
  4. You have to properly and smoothly discipline your kid’s activity by not sending the massage "You are special" to your child.

Normally parents tend to highlight the negative things. So avoid this by replacing bad behavior with good behavior.Try to learn new parenting approaches and behavior alteration techniques. Try to deal with each little problem to stop it from becoming major difficulties.

Socially, all doctors and teachers should be aware of the initial signs of behavior problems. The school must look for possible learning difficulties that may cause aggravation of behavior in children and solve the problem by taking help of doctors.

Always try to develop a positive attitude in your child. This will help to overcome the boundaries that seizures have created. Don’t forget to encourage your kid's doctor and teachers to apply the same approach.

Instead of considering your kid as a handicapped child with epilepsy and behavior troubles, accept the challenge of raising your unique child by imbibing excellent qualities in him/her.
