It isn’t unusual for kids to vomit, but when it happens often, it could be frustrating for both parents and children. Several times there isn’t anything to worry about and a visit to the doctor isn’t required. Taking a closer look at the possible causes of vomiting in kids could help anxious parents decide on the best treatment for it.
Identification
There is no instant reason for concern when a child vomits. Several times vomiting is due to a child’s eating something which reacts badly with his/her stomach or him/her having eaten too much. You need to stay positive when a child is throwing up as it helps to keep everyone calm, so that you could look into the cause of vomiting.
Infection
Recurrent vomiting could be due to an infection, many times gastroenteritis, a virus which infects the gastrointestinal tract. As per a study, stomach flu or gastroenteritis could also cause nausea and fever, but the greatest concern is keeping children hydrated when they vomit frequently. Giving children water or oral electrolyte solutions would keep them from getting dehydrated and might relieve the stomach.
Anxiety
Anxiety might be another reason behind frequent vomiting in children. Kids often get scared when separated from loved ones and also have fears of odd places, the dark and unknown situations. These anxieties could cause a nervous stomach leading to vomiting. Just because a kid is feeling anxious with recurrent vomiting, doesn’t mean they have an underlying psychological condition, they could just need extra support in taxing situations.
GERD
GERD or gastro esophageal reflux disease is one of the causes for vomiting in kids. This is a common cause for infants to vomit after feedings and kids to vomit. According to a study, a badly coordinated gastrointestinal tract causes GERD. Other factors that could cause this are overeating, obesity and medications. Doctors could properly diagnose the condition if GERD is known to be the reason for vomiting. Medication might be needed to help stop frequent vomiting due to it.
Pyloric Stenosis
It’s a condition which is caused by a thickening of the muscle or valve that empties the stomach. This valve could be so distended that it does not allow the stomach to empty. Babies with pyloric stenosis would typically begin to have projectile vomiting after each feeding when they are two to six weeks old.
Considerations
The main worry for any kid that is dealing with recurrent vomiting is ensuring that they are hydrated. Infants are at greatest risk of becoming hydrated, which could result in hospitalization. If a kid is vomiting so often that water or electrolyte solutions couldn’t be kept in the body, it is a good idea to seek medical attention. It is better to contact a doctor if you see any signs of very dry mouth, hollow eyes, no urination for more than 6 to 8 hours, or extreme drowsiness.
Vomiting might be caused by foods that are hard for your child to digest (such as sugar or by bacteria in undercooked meat). Make sure your child eats a healthy diet. Causes of vomiting in kids could vary from person to person, but ensure that you give them appropriate medication at the appropriate time.
