Infants become very fussy and restless when their stomach disturbs. As they cannot say what is happening inside, it becomes very difficult to find the exact reason of stomach ache. There are many causes of stomach ache in infants. Let us focus on them one by one.
· Astroesophagael Reflux
Astroesophagael reflux causes sour stomach in infants. This forms stomach ache. This situation may need medical assistance because there are chances that it can interfere with the baby's ability to breathe or gain weight. It also interrupts his/her heart rate. In this situation, keep your infant in an elevated position during feeding.
· Breast milk Intolerance and Formula
Stomach pain in baby may be caused by breast milk intolerance or formula. In this case, there are many options accessible in the market. Your pediatrician can help you in selecting the formula that will be best suited for your baby.
Some of the options are soy formulas, formulas that are hypoallergenic and lactose-free formulas.
If infant is breastfeeding, the mother needs to watch what she is eating. Foods and drinks pass from the mother’s system into the breast milk. This can cause stomach ache in infants.
Avoid gassy vegetables e.g. broccoli, green peppers, cauliflower, and onions. This may lead to sour stomach for your baby.
· Infants and Babies with Colic have Stomach Pain
Even though the reasons behind Colic are not yet completely understood, it is possible that babies with colic always have stomach pain.
Due to colic, infants cry more often, and become upset. These symptoms are long lasting.
Generally, if an infant is crying continuously for at least three hours and if it occurs at least three times a week, it’s likely she has colic which causes stomach ache.
· Intestinal Illness
This is another cause of stomach ache in infants. Stomach flu is another reason for many infants to get pain in the stomach.
This stomach flu is easily noticeable if infant is vomiting. Along with this, the infant may have fever and diarrhea when there is a problem of intestinal illness. A warm bath may help to reduce the pain of the stomach muscles.
- Food Allergies
If your infant is allergic to any foods, he/she will have stomach ache after taking them. Foods that cause intolerance are always dairy products, eggs, fish, berries, nuts and wheat.
As some foods are harder to digest, they cause stomach ache in infants. These foods include acidic foods and they cause sour stomach along with pain.
