Nosebleed is known to be normal in healthy children and adults. Sometimes, children experience nosebleed frequently. There are different causes of nosebleed in children. This situation of nosebleed in children is easy to treat by encouraging them to follow healthy habits.

Causes of Nosebleed in Children

Causes of nosebleed in children can vary from child to child and his/her habits. Some generalized causes are listed as below:

  • Nose bleeding can take place due to busting or rupturing of the small vein’s lining in nose. Normally, this happens due to the habits of children like blowing into a tissue too hard, picking the nose or trauma to the nose while playing.
  • Sometimes, the vein ruptures accidently when the child inserts something like marbles, peanuts, etc. in the inner part of the nose.
  • Sometimes, a dry climate or using an air-conditioning unit or heater can lead to drying of nose cannel, resulting in nose bleeding.
  • Trauma to the nose by foreign bodies, forceful nose blowing, etc. can also lead to nose bleeding.
  • Tumors, specifically malignant tumor present in nose or sinuses may also cause nosebleeding.
  • The condition of nosebleeds is, higher specifically in colder or winter months. In these seasons, upper respiratory infections commonly occur due to fluctuation of temperature and humidity.
  • In any case, if a child is medically prescribed the blood thinning medications called anti coagulants, these can also lead to nose bleeding.
  • If nosebleeds are taking place frequently in children, this can be a symptom of disorder like high blood pressure.
  • Overly sensitive blood vessels can burst and bleed without any reason in warm or dry seasons.
  • Infections in the nose, throat and sinuses can also cause nosebleeding
  • Common colds and flu can lead to nose bleeding
  • Allergies, such as dust allergy or hay fever can cause bleeding
  • Excessive straining, which can happen with constipation
  • Inflammation of the nose can also cause nosebleeding
  • When the partition between  the two nostrils is crooked, bleeding takes place

Frequency in Nose Bleeds

·         Some children experience more frequent nose bleeding. It is because they have veins located closely to the mucous membrane of the nose. Veins that are closer to the skin can burst when touched.

·         Another cause of this frequent nose bleeding is the child's behavior and his /her habits of playing with the nose and its mucus.

·         We can easily minimize nosebleeds by cutting fingernails of the child and applying petroleum jelly to the nose of the child at night to hydrate the canals of nose.

Treatment of Nose Bleeds in Children

  • As soon as the bleeding of nose takes place, make your child sit straight and face the eye towards the roof.
  • Hold the child's nose with the help of thumb and forefingers until the blood coagulates. Apply pressure to the nose for 10 minutes to stop bleeding.

More importantly, convince your child that it is normal and explain the causes of nose bleeding in children for them in an entertaining way that will encourage them to correct their mistake.
