Many people suffer from foot swelling problems. There are specific causes of foot swelling and it varies from individual to individual. Before discussing the causes of foot swelling, it is very important to know what is swelling exactly.

Foot Swelling

·         Foot swelling is referred as buildup of fluid in foot. Collection of excess of fluid in the body is also known edema. In case of foot swelling, the entire portion of the foot or some part of it appears larger as compared to the normal part. This swelling is most of the time painless, but sometimes it can represent the symptoms like bruising, itchiness, numbness, pain, stiffness, redness, and tenderness.

·         This foot swelling is basically known to be a symptom of a condition and it is not an injury. The foot swelling has definite cause for it, sometimes it is possible that sitting or standing for excess time can lead to swelling.

·         Severe swelling in foot may result from an injury of broken bone or spine. Sometimes, conditions like heart failure or arthritis may lead to foot swelling.

·         The exact time span of this swelling also varies and depends on factors like causes, person’s immunity, etc.

·         It is studied that foot swelling does not lead to any life-threatening complications, but it needs immediate medical care to know the exact cause and prevent complications.

·         We should always keep in mind that foot swelling is a sign of serious condition and can lead to infection of the bones which is known as osteomyelitis.

·         So in this case, you must immediately make contact a medical health care professional, so as to prevent and avoid the complications like sudden chest pain, palpitations, pressure, high fever, change in consciousness level, etc.

Causes of Foot Swelling

The principle behind foot swelling is that gravity pulls the fluids to the feet and ankles, followed by swelling. Foot swelling can lead to serious conditions in kidneyliver, heart, or blood vessels. Some important causes of foot swelling are listed as below:

·         Eating a poor diet

·         Diet with high level of salt and carbohydrates

·         Taking birth control pills

·         Taking hormone replacement therapy pills

·         Drug abuse

·         Sodium retention

·         Pregnancy

·         Muscle injury

·         Varicose veins

·         History of phlebitis

·         Allergic reactions

·         PMS

·         Preeclampsia

·         Neuromuscular disorders

·         Trauma

·         Laxative abuse

·         Diuretics abuse

From this, we can say that treatment of foot swelling depends on the causes of swelling. Taking anti-inflammatory medicines can help to reduce swelling.

Other treatments one can undergo are as below:

·         Use of leg wedges while sleeping

·         Support feet with socks and stocking

·         Use of proper fitting shoes and socks

We can reduce feet swelling by directly treating the causes of feet swelling. Reduced intake of salt, drinking plenty of water, regular exercising, avoiding sitting or standing for a long period of time and regular health checkups have to be followed. All these precautions can reduce swelling and make your life healthy.
