Sneezing is an irritating condition that everyone experiences at some point in their life. There won't be a single person who hasn't sneezed in his/her life. It's believed that irritation of the mucus membrane inside the nose is one of the causes of excessive sneezing. There can be several reasons for such irritation. Dust or smoke, a viral infection or presence of foreign body inside the nose, etc., could lead to irritation in the nose. Sneezing excessively can leave you reeling in distress and cause several further problems as well.
When an individual sneezes, there is a unique sound produced and it's the way your body ejects the irritant from the nasal passage. However, excessive sneezing is an attempt in which the body reacts for removing the irritant when it becomes stubborn and doesn't expel easily.
Causes of Excessive Sneezing
By now you'd probably know what sneezing is all about, as you might have experienced it many times in your life. As mentioned earlier, the presence of some irritant in the nasal passages causes sneezing, which results in a sudden and loud eviction of the particles. When an individual sneezes, there is a distinct and unique sound made which is identifiable by all. However, when the irritant refuses to be released from the nasal passages, excessive sneezing occurs.
Allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, common cold, dust allergy, and upper respiratory tract infection are some of the common causes for excessive sneezing. Other symptoms such as stuffy, runny nose, watering from eyes, sore throat, itching in the upper palate, etc., might also accompany excessive sneezing.
Allergies too play a significant role in sneezing. A response by the immune system of hypersensitive person to an external stimulus is known as an allergy. No physical symptoms might be caused in others by this external stimulus when they're exposed to it. For instance, an individual might be allergic to smoke or dust which could irritate the nasal membrane causing plenty of sneezing while others might not necessarily be troubled by the same thing.
Allergies such as hay fever, mold allergy, pet allergy, or pollen allergies are some common causes of sneezing as well. Inhaled fumes, pepper, chili powder, dust, reaction to sunlight, and change in air temperature are some other causes of sneezing. All these factors that lead to sneezing are also known to cause excessive sneezing as well.
Risks of Excessive Sneezing
Most individuals, right after waking up also suffer from excessive sneezing. You might feel excessive sneezing like a harmless thing; however, beyond a certain limit it can be risky or dangerous as well. You can dislocate your jaw, pull a muscle in your back, or can even end up causing damage to your respiratory tract.
If you've contracted a disease of some sort, excessive sneezing can also spread infection. Remember to cover your mouth and nose every time you sneeze as it puts people around you at risk.
Home Remedies

- Cover your nose if allergic to dust and pollens
- Drink nettle tea as it helps in lessening the inflammation of nasal mucus membrane and ease excessive sneezing.
- When suffering from excessive sneezing, include onion and garlic in your food.
- Always eat and drink foods that have Vitamin C as it enhances the immune system and lessens the production of histamine in the body, which reduces sneezing.
