Causes of Cramps in Toes

There are different causes of cramps in toes. This is something that is experienced by many people. It has different reasons; some are related with nutrition, while other bouts are due to excess strain on the feet.

 

Causes of Cramps in Toes

  • One of the common causes for foot cramps is known to be old-fashioned fatigue. Cramps can occur when our feet are tired from walking or standing for long periods of time. Adding some cushioning to our shoes can help to lower this type of stress and strain. It helps to eliminate frequent foot cramps.
  • Sometimes cramps in toes may be a sign of lowered circulation. When the blood flow to the extremities like foot is not sufficient, it leads to lack of oxygen to the feet and results into cramps.
  • Shortage of important vitamins and minerals can result in toe cramps. Low level of potassium normally results in cramps. All these nutritional deficiencies can be solved by taking a well balanced diet. You can also use supplements. A toe cramp is basically the result of poor nutrition.
  • In some case, poor hydration may also lead to toe cramps. This problem can be easily solved by drinking plenty of water.
  • One who smokes or drinks alcohol regularly will also lead to cramps as both these actions can increase the chances of dehydration.
  • General health issues can also lead to toe cramp. People with diabetes regularly experience cramps due to decreased flow of oxygen to the toe.
  • From this we can say the foot or toe cramp is a temporary pain that can go away by making good lifestyle and dietary changes. Foot cramps may be a symptom of an illness that can be successfully treated if trapped in the premature stages. The pain of cramp last for a few seconds to minutes.
  • Toe cramps can affect people of any age or all age groups. This can take place at the middle of the night, during exercise, or while walking.
  • Cramps can be caused due to wearing shoes that don't fit. High heeled shoes and ill-fitting shoes which are extremely tight especially at the toe area may sometimes become a cause of toe cramps.
  • Lack of calcium in diet which is known as calcium deficiency can cause toe spasms or toe cramps.
  • Long duration walks, rigorous exercise, overexertion, etc. are some more causes of cramping in toes.
  • Dancers, especially ballet dancer performing pirouettes and tippy-toe dances more frequently suffer cramps due to stress and strain on toes.
  • Some given medications for high cholesterol, asthma, and hypertension can also result into toe cramping.

 

Treatment for Toe Cramps

Toe cramps treatment involves some simple methods that can help to avoid toe cramps.

  • Do not wearing high heels daily. Keep them for particular occasions. Start wearing flat foot wear or shoes having roomy toe fit.
  • During the entire day, remove the shoes and exercise your feet by moving ankles in a round motion, followed by bending and flexing your feet. This will minimize the risk of experiencing toe cramps.

In this way, you can avoid all these causes of cramps in toes by applying proper lifestyle for yourself.
