What is Anal Itching?

 

Anal Itching is scientifically termed as ‘pruritus ani’ or anusitis or ‘the swamps’. It is a kind of skin irritation that occurs at the anus which lies at the exit of the rectum. It leads to constant trouble at the exit of the rectum after attending nature’s call. A person suffering from this type of problem faces increase of moisture in the region of pain, continuous pressure and cravings to rub the area by using a piece of cloth.  

Many times, a person facing from the problem of itching develops anal itching due to reaction of chemicals present in the stool. The suffering due to scratching and presence of moisture in the anal area increases the intensity of anal itching and causes inflammation of the rectum. When the condition becomes more intense, it becomes intolerable for the person and causes discomfort, constant burning and pain.

 

 

Usually, it is seen that anal itching occurs more in men as compared to women. The reason is not known, but most of the times, it is identified in males. It takes place around the opening of the bowels that is at the anal region.

 

What are the Factors that Increase the Risk of Anal Itching in Humans?

 

  • Excessive intake of antibiotics
  • Fecal soilage
  • The dietary habits of a person
  • Unceasing dry skin conditions like psoriasis and seborrhea

Causes of Anal Itching

 

  • Anal itching is caused by the presence of infuriating chemicals in the foods consumed like: coffee, tea, carbonated beverages, spices, hot sauces, peppers, milk products, ketchup and white bread.

 

  • In some cases, itching in the anal region is caused by anal perspiration, liquid stools and conditions like diarrhea and left over stool deposits.

 

  • One of the reason is the yeast infection or ‘candidiasis’

 

  • In some cases, presence of diseases like diabetes mellitus, HIV infection, treatment with antibiotics and psoriasis leads to itching in the anal region. Apart from this, disorders like Crohn's disease lead to the development of fistulas at the small intestine or on the surroundings of colon. These fistulas cause pain in the anal area. Moreover, pinworms, hemorrhoids, fissures and skin tags also lead to anal itching.

 

How to Treat and Manage Anal Itching?

 

  • To treat and manage anal itching, deal with the condition as soon as possible. Do not neglect it as the problem may become worse.

 

  • Cut your finger nails as it may create a problem while scratching the anal area. You can wear gloves while going to bed as you are likely to scratch the most during that period.

 

  • You can even make use of antihistamine medication to reduce the itching

 

  • Try to keep the anal region clean and make sure that all feces get emptied.

 

  • Never use soap on your anus; however, keep the anal area clean and free of bacteria by using a moist cloth.

 

Awareness about the causes of anal itching proves beneficial to stay from the condition. Apply them wisely to avoid the problem.
