A lot of women face the problem of acnes, blemishes, birthmark, dark circles & skin imperfections. Other specific problems are rosacea, vitiligo, chloasma, burns, appearance of veins, & tattoos. You can not just go ahead for a surgery to fix these minor problems, instead now-a-days a lot of creams & cosmetics have been developed to conceal these marks. Camouflage makeup is a range of cosmetic products designed to cover up skin discoloration & blemishes on face & other body parts. It is a wonderful technique to disguise a mark that draws everyone’s attention & make us feel uncomfortable.

There are three basic approaches to cosmetic camouflage:-

  1. Concealing: Concealers are thick creamy products; are more opaque than foundation makeup & thus they are very effective in covering scars, bruises or healed incision lines after surgery. They come in a variety of shades to match the natural color of skin. For fair complexioned, there are several shades of beige- natural, nude, almond, perfect, warm & cocoa and for dark skins- perfect honey, perfect tan, perfect bronze etc.
  1. Color correcting: Color correctors are used to disguise the bluish- yellow shade of a bruise or the redness during/after the healing of burns. Correctors come in tinted forms blended with the concealer. Purple corrector neutralizes yellow skin tones and the green corrector yields a brown tone to neutralize redness of burns, appearance of capillaries & veins etc.
  1. Contouring: Contouring helps to even out the irregular facial surface contours by creating dimension using light & shadow.  While light colors are used to make surface depressions appear shallower, the darker shades help in toning down swelling or protrusions. For contouring, you need powder based contour shadow which should be two shades darker and a highlighter which is two shades lighter than the concealer.

Following is a list of cosmetic camouflage products & their area of action which can be bought over the counter:-

  1. Amazing concealer- Used to camouflage birthmarks, age spots, scars, rosacea, vitiligo, broken capillaries etc.
  2. Classic Cover mark: Used for birthmarks.
  3. Derma blend: Used for uneven skin tone, freckles, post surgery scars, rosacea, scarring etc.
  4. Derma color
  5. Cover blend
  6. Veil cover: Used for visual skin problems & tattoos.

A concealer containing mineral oil & a high pigment level is best for camouflaging purposes as it covers the spots better & stays longer. To choose the right color of your concealer, it is best to test it on your jaw line in broad daylight. It should blend well with the skin & yet mask the targeted spots. Following are some tips to use a concealer wisely to get the best results:-

  1. To conceal dark spots, blend a yellow eye shadow powder to the concealer & then apply it on dark circles.
  2. To mask broken capillaries & veins, add blue or green eye shadow to a yellow toned concealer with a high pigment level & use a pointed fiber brush for smooth application.
  3. To hide under eye dark circles, first apply a silky make up primer with a high level of silicone & then use a creamy concealer with medium pigment level & matt finish.
  4. For red scars & birthmarks, first apply a coat of matt primer to the scars then apply a coat of dry yellow toned concealer.
  5. Inside of the nose bridge, corners of mouth & outer corners of eyes need extra attention while applying a concealer.
  6. After applying concealer, it is a must to dust over loose       translucent powder to give a finished look to the face.

By using the art of camouflage, one can effectively conceal the ugly marks & change the looks drastically.
