Since time immemorial, women from all around the globe yearn for a smooth, flawless skin by removing off unwanted body hairs & technology have always helped them to attain their desired look. This not only adds to their beauty but is hygienic as well. Hairs can be removed either by temporary hair removal methods or by permanent hair removal techniques. Unwanted hair removal could be from face, arms, underarms, bikini line & legs. Temporary hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, sugaring, threading etc. are easy to perform & can be done at home or at a parlor but they have to be carried out regularly after a certain period of time. Women who don’t want to undergo this regimen time & again prefer permanent hair removal techniques to get rid of their unwanted hairs for eternity.

A number of methods have been developed for permanent hair removal that uses chemicals, energy of varying types or a combination of various techniques. Commonly used methods are Electrolysis, Laser hair removal, electric tweezers, transcutaneous hair removal, microwaves, some topical preparations etc. But before going ahead for them you must understand their advantages & complications involved with them since none of them is 100% proven & none of them really removes your hair forever. Generally speaking, permanent hair removal is actually long term reduction & it could be anything from a few months to a few years.

Read on to know more about them:-

1) Electrolysis- In this process, the practitioner slides a solid hair thin metal probe into each hair follicle; inserting it properly doesn’t puncture the skin. Electricity is delivered to the follicle through the probe, which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs. There are also different methods used in electrolysis. In galvanic electrolysis, chemicals are used to kill the hair matrix cells while in thermolytic electrolysis, heat destroys the hair removal. A third method, known as blend, is also available which uses both radio frequency & direct current, combining many of the advantages of galvanic & thermolysis. You need to attend a number of sessions to complete the entire process.

Results vary depending on the person, the nature or the coarseness of hairs, time they take to grow back & skill of the cosmetologist. Regarding the pain during the procedure, the doctor often uses a mild anesthetic to numb the area to ease the pain.

Disadvantages: The entire procedure is quite expensive, painful & tedious. It is more troublesome if the area is very large. If done improperly, it can result in lasting skin damage & spread of infection.

2) Laser hair removal- In this method, light at a specified is delivered from a hand piece into the skin which causes thermal or mechanical damage to a hair follicle, while sparing surrounding tissues. This method is most effective on patients with darker skin & lighter skin since melanin (pigment that gives hair its color) absorbs the laser light. Patients may experience discomfort that ranges from a mild sting to a feeling as if their skin has been snapped with a rubber band. Several sittings are required to complete the procedure.

Side effects- Normal side effects are itching, redness & swelling around the treatment area. Risks include the chance of burning the skin or discoloring dark skin with the laser, lesions, white spots, appearance of acne & patchy regrowth.

These two methods are most effective & widely used. Other methods are relatively unsafe & ineffective for permanent hair removal.
