An armpit fungus infection is irritating and quite embarrassing. It is referred to a skin condition which occurs due to ringworm infection. It affects the skin of the axilla (armpit) that results into itching, burning, and darkening of the skin. An armpit fungus can become persistent due to rise in moisture content (sweating), dimmed light, and warmth (body heat). Armpit fungal prevention is vital in order to get rid of the itching and burning sensations.

Causes of an Armpit Fungus Infection

An armpit fungus occurs due to consumption of the superficial skin layers by dermatophyte or skin mold. This infection is not limited to armpit, it also affects the skin around the armpit and this condition is known as tinea corporis.

Armpit infection is contagious. It generally gets transferred from an infected person to an uninfected person. The fungal strands or pores from an infected body get transferred through scratching on skin with the use of fingers or on subsequent use of towels after bathing

Symptoms of an Armpit Fungus Infection

The symptoms of an armpit fungus infection are similar to a skin fungal infection. The symptoms include itching, burning under the arms generally due to scratching, dark discoloration, musty body odor and flakes or specks of skin on clothes due to scratching.

Tips on Armpit Fungus Prevention

  • Try to keep your armpits dry. It means avoid using water in that area. No shower, bath or swimming is recommended if you are having an armpit infection. Growth of fungi is encouraged with the presence of moisture.
  • To reduce sweating in and around the armpits, an anti fungal powder is quite helpful.
  • Make sure to wear cotton shirts and keep it changing regularly, especially in summers or when the weather is warm. Adequate ventilation in the infected area is necessary to keep it dry.
  • Another source of infection can be your underwear, so wash it thoroughly.
  • Stop using any deodorant or perfume based product until your armpit fungus gets cured.
  • Women generally use bleaching creams in their armpits to lighten the dark skin. Avoid using such cosmetic products as it may cause further inflammation.
  • The skin becomes too itchy during a fungal infection. Avoid scratching your skin as far as possible. Scratching leads to micro-abrasions which further leads to persistent fungal infection.
  • Use anti-itching creams, gels or lotions to treat the itching areas. Use these for a continuous period of 4 to 6 weeks. At first, use these creams sparingly and observe whether they are really helpful or are making the itch worse. If your skin is sensitive, be careful while using any of the anti-itching creams.
  • Consult a good skin specialist or dermatologist if your armpit infection is not improving or if it is getting worse. The dermatologist can prescribe you the best anti-fungal medications that can help you to get rid of the infection.

The armpit fungus prevention tips also state that a person must stay away and avoid using things and materials of a fungal infected person. If followed, these tips can help a lot in preventing armpit fungus infection.
