What is Tree Nut Allergy?

Tree nut allergies on many occasions go unnoticed as it is very difficult to recognize the main ingredient. Tree nut allergy can be quite troublesome since even if the products are not made from nuts but manufactured in the same equipment, it can also cause an allergic reaction. Children are known to be more prone to nut allergies as compared to adults.

Tree nuts-

Tree nuts are widely used in various lotions and shampoos. Cookies, candy, granola bars, salad dressing, marzipan, grain bread and some ice cream flavours contain nuts. Tree nuts are also used in many oriental foods such as Thai, African and Chinese.

Tree nut allergy-

  1. Tree nut allergy is described when a hypersensitive reaction occurs towards tree nuts. Tree nuts and peanuts allergy are completely different. Dry fruits such as almonds come under the category of tree nuts and peanuts come under the category of legumes.
  1. Allergy towards tree nut can be more serious in some people with mild symptoms in some.

Some symptoms of tree nut allergy are as under-

  1. Tree nut allergy at first causes uneasiness, itchiness in the eyes and face.
  2. Tree nut allergy also causes: Difficulty in breathing and swallowing, nausea, stomach aches, cramps and diarrhoea. Angioedema is also caused due to tree nut allergy where swelling under the skin takes place.
  3. Allergic symptoms with regard to tree nut allergy are: abdominal pain, wheezing, swelling, rashes, runny nose, itchiness in the lips, tongue and throat. The skin, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and the gastrointestinal tract are known to get impaired due to allergic reactions.
  4. Anaphylaxis is caused to an allergic reaction towards tree nut allergy. Anaphylaxis leads to reduced blood pressure, swelling, dilated arteries and veins.
  5. If not treated in time tree nut allergy can cause an anaphylactic shock which can thereafter lead to coma and death in severe cases.

Treatment for tree nut allergy-

  1. The best and the most suited way to avoid nut allergies is to avoid nut and nut containing substances.
  2. As you notice symptoms of tree nut allergy, it would be wise to seek medical help and assistance. If symptoms of this allergy are not checked on time it can result in low blood pressure, shock and increase in heart rate.
  3. Symptoms of tree nut can be reversed with an injection of epinephrine which can also treat anaphylaxis. An injection of epinephrine would be preferred to tablets, since injection can aid in reaching the bloodstream at a much faster and effective rate.
  4. As a substitute to nuts, one can opt for soy nuts which is not a nut but soybean which goes through an entire process of soaking and baking which makes it crispy like a nut.
  5. Tree nut allergies can be treated with the intake of vitamins such as: vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, antioxidants, Quercitin and Glucosamine.

With the advice of your Doctor, you can revise your meal type and include substitutes instead of tree nuts. Before receiving any sort of treatment it would be most advisable to seek medical help.
