What are the Reasons for Latex Condom Allergy?

Latex which is produced from rubber trees or Hevea brasiliensis is a milky fluid. Latex when processed is used to make various products such as balloons, gloves, pencil erasers, medical and dental equipment, rubber bands, condoms and sanitary napkins. Latex allergy is extremely inconvenient since most of the necessary products are made from it.

During an allergic reaction the antibodies which are present in the body release chemicals which injure cells and tissues. Chemicals released such as histamines affect sensitive areas such as the mucous glands, smooth muscle cells and the skin.

Latex allergy-

  1. Latex allergy occurs when the immune system in an individual is sensitive or shows a reaction to an outside substance which is called an allergen. During latex allergy the immune system shows a sensitive outburst to any product which contains latex.
  2. When an individual is allergic to latex, even small amounts of exposure to latex and its products can lead to an allergic reaction. Even if the latex dust rubs off an individual who is sensitive to latex, can show immediate allergic reactions.
  3. Latex allergy is mainly caused with frequent exposure to natural rubber latex. When latex contained substances such as gloves come in contact with sensitive areas such as nose, eyes or mouth, a sensitive reaction is known to occur.
  4. Latex allergy causes; outbreak of rash or even hives in the affected area. Latex allergy also causes wheezing and breathing difficulties.

Reasons for latex condom allergy are:

  1. During the manufacturing of the condoms, various chemicals are also added along to increase the speed of vulcanization. Vulcanization takes place to protect the rubber from oxygen which is present in the air.
  2. Latex comprises of polyisoprene, a benign organic polymer that brings about both elasticity and strength.
  3. Latex condom allergy is caused due to the fact that it contains large amounts of lipids, sugars, allergic proteins and nucleic acids. People are allergic to latex condoms mainly because the comprising elements present in latex contain allergic substances.
  4. The skin is shown to be extremely sensitive to latex, which makes individuals uncomfortable for using the products.
  5. Latex allergy is known to cause a health condition called anaphylaxis. Allergic reactions to latex also results in low blood pressure.

Treatment options for latex allergy:

  1. If an individual shows latex allergy symptoms, it would be most suitable to seek medical assistance at the earliest. Latex allergy is best treated by a Doctor, since the doctor would work towards reducing the symptoms.
  2. Anaphylaxis is a serious health problem, which is caused due to latex allergy. One should consult a health care professional if diagnosed with anaphylaxis.
  3. Doctors to treat latex allergies would perform a simple skin or blood test. Blood tests are extremely essential to remove any other medical doubts seen other than latex allergy. It is very important to monitor the skins reactions to latex containing products.
  4. To treat latex allergy there are medicated creams and lotions available which will help reduce these latex allergy symptoms. Other than cure one should work towards preventing an allergic reaction from occurring.
