What are the reasons of child allergy?

The tendency to develop allergies in children may be hereditary and child allergies are very common. It does not mean that if one or both parents have allergies, it will pass down to all the kids. Some times your kid may inherit the genes for a particular allergy, but it may not show child allergy symptoms as it may be in passive conditions.

Child allergies are seen even if there is no family history for allergies. Also a child may be allergic to more than one substance.

Air borne Allergens

Children are allergic to many things carried through air, especially if your child is suffering from asthma.

Dust mites

Dust mites are one of the most common causes of allergy in children. These microscopic insects are present all around us and feed on our dead skin.

Pollens

Pollen grains are another source of infection in children. It is also known as hay fever or rose fever. Trees, grasses, weeds and many plants release these tiny particles in air for fertilization. Since the process is seasonal, the allergies are also seasonal.

Pollen count

Pollen count refers to the number of pollen grains present in the air. This determines the severity of the symptoms of allergy. On any given day, pollen count is higher in the mornings and on a warm, breezy day.

 Molds

Molds are the fungi that thrive both indoors and outdoors. Moulds are more where there is poor drainage, piles of garbage, rotting plant parts, etc.

Moulds grow in dark places indoors all the year round. It is more where there is poor ventilation such as a bathroom, clothes hamper and under sinks.

Pets

This is one of the most important sources of allergy for kids as they often tend to play with pets. Animals like dogs and cats usually have a habbit of licking their body. Saliva gets on their fur and dries eventually and becomes airborne. Pet allergens are present in dander, hair and urine.

 Child food allergies

Most of the children are affected by food allergies. Common ones are milk, fish, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat.

Milk

Nearly 8-10 % children are allergic to milk. Milk allergy is due to the proteins found in milk. Most of the formulas for infants are based on cow’s milk. This cow milk protein allergy is also called as formula protein allergy.  Many children show abnormal immune system reactions to foods like cheese and milk products.

Eggs

If children have allergy to eggs, it is a real problem to parents. Eggs are the ingredients of foods kids eat. In case of hidden ingredients, it is very difficult to diagnose. Children are allergic to the protein in egg whites or the yolk.

Sea food and shellfish

The proteins in seafood cause many different types of allergic reactions. This type of allergy is usually carried by the children even when they grow old.

Peanuts and tree nuts allergy

Peanut allergy is very severe and often causes life threatening reactions. Children suffering from peanut allergy do not grow out of it.

Other common sources of child allergies

  1. Insect stings
  2. Medicines
  3. Chemicals in detergents, dyes, cleaners, etc

What are the reasons of child allergy?  Child allergies may be due to food allergens of air borne nature. Check your child for allergic reactions. This article will guide you in the matter.
