Food colors added to the foods also add flavor and keep the food away from discoloration. However, these food colors can generate an allergy in few people. Every year, about 1-2 % of the population suffers from food color allergy. Tips to avoid food color allergy will help you to give solution if in case you come across these allergic foods. Before focusing on the tips, let us first discuss the exact symptoms of food color allergy. Food color allergy can be detected with the help of following symptoms:
- Hives
- Rash

- Headache
- Nausea

Common Food Additives that can cause Allergies
Tartrazine
It is a type of yellow food color, also known as E102. It can be affected by forming rash and hives. This is the most common food additive which causes allergy to people.
Carmine
Red food color, named as E120. This has ability to cause allergy.
Sulfites
Sulfites are used in beers and wines. They also help in controlling microbial growth, but can lead to allergy.
MSG
This is prepared from sodium and glutamic acid. It is basically a flavor enhancer used in Chinese food e.g. soups, sauces, etc.

If you know that a specific additive is causing allergy, try to avoid it
- Choose fresh fruits and vegetables as a balanced diet
- Avoid processed foods that containing food additives
- For avoiding food allergies in children, first know the common symptoms of food allergy such as wheezing, difficulty in breathing, severe skin rashes, nausea, multiple times of vomiting, abnormal swelling, abdominal pain, etc. As soon as you see these, you should be careful about that food.
- There are some methods which are useful in avoiding food allergies for children. Until your child has a completely grown immunity system, it is better to withheld foods which are found to be allergic.
- Limit or avoid processed and prepackaged foods. Eat a diet of fresh whole foods.
- Learn all the names of the additive which are allergic to you
- Always buy organically grown products or the products from local farmers
- Ask information about the color additives added in food at restaurants. Fast food may contain more additives than other type of foods present in restaurants.
- Directly speak to the chef if you have any doubt. Always avoid the food if you are not certain about its safety.
- If you are travelling through air, call airlines in advance and let them know about your dietary restrictions and allergic conditions. See to it that you can get a special meal for yourselves, or in any case bring your own food.
- Keep in mind the list of restaurants, hotels, cafes, and other places which serve additive-free food.
