Tomato allergy is a kind of food allergy. It is not a very common type of allergy and is rarely found among people. Tomato has a natural chemical known as salicylate which is related to aspirin and is a derivative of salicylic acid. Tomato and tomato based foods have high degree of salicylate which some people can not tolerate at all.

Due to reaction to salicylates in tomato a person starts having allergic reactions. However, it is important to differentiate between food intolerance and food allergy. Many people have mild symptoms which are an effect of tomato intolerance rather that allergic reaction. The intolerance causes mild symptoms and are not life threatening. However, real tomato allergy can be fatal at times causing anaphylactic shock.

Tomato allergy can occur in different ways among different people. Some are only allergic to raw tomatoes while others are also allergic to tomatoes in processed food like canned tomato, jam, sauce, pickle, etc.

Is there a cure for Tomato Allergy?

There is no cure for any food allergy, including Tomato Allergy. We can only take preventive steps to reduce the occurrence of allergy symptoms. Here are a few precautions you can take to reduce the effect of tomato allergy:

  • Increase your intake of Vitamin A which is an antioxidant and fastens the healing process.
  • Optimum quantity of Vitamin C helps strengthen the immune system and body’s capacity to fight out infections.
  • Glucosamine also provides relief in tomato allergy symptoms.
