How to Prevent Sun Allergy

Are you allergic to sun? This article can give you tips on how to prevent sun allergy. Sun allergy mainly affects the skin of the person. So people who are allergic to sun must protect their body from the UV rays of the sun.

In sun allergy the immune system of the allergic person reacts to the sun rays in an abnormal manner. The immune system treats the sun-altered skin as foreign object and starts a defense process that results in sun allergy. Sun allergy can occur at any age but it is common among people in their 20s and 30s. People who are sensitive to sun rays are more susceptible to skin cancer. Thus how to prevent sun allergy is becoming a challenging task for Americans. Research shows that one in five Americans can develop skin cancer in their lifetime and over exposure to sun is a major cause of this fatal disease.

Sun allergy generally occurs during the spring time when people start getting more and more sun exposure. In mild cases of sun allergy the person gradually acclimatizes to the rays and symptoms become better. However, in severe cases the symptoms can still be strong and require lot of care.

How does one know that he or she is allergic to sun? People generally react immediately after sun exposure or a couple of hours later. Here are the common symptoms of sun allergy:

5.      Inflammation of the skin

Many times people get confused between sun allergy and other skin problems. Sometimes due to reaction with cream, lotion, powder, or medicine a person can have same symptoms like sun allergy. The most common is when people get confused with sunscreen lotion reaction with sun allergy. Thus one has to carefully observe the symptoms in order to confirm that the allergy is due to sun only.

It is very difficult to avoid sun as one cannot stay indoors permanently. However, one can definitely try to prevent exposure to the sun rays by following certain rules. Here are a few tips on how to prevent sun allergy:

1.      Always use a sun protection cream before stepping out in the sun. Look for the following qualities in sun protection cream – it should have UVA and UVB blockers with high quantity of SPF.

2.      Sunscreen lotions with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are also good for sun protection and safe for the skin.

3.      For more protection use an umbrella in the sun.

4.      There are jackets and other clothes available that are made with special material to provide protection from the sun.

5.      Avoid sun tanning near the beach because sun allergy can be severe in coastal areas.

With simple and careful steps one can avoid allergic reaction caused by the sun. Your dermatologist can also advise tips on how to prevent sun allergy depending on the symptoms. Sun allergy is a cause of concern for those who have severe reactions and all possible steps should be taken to avoid any serious consequences.
