Parents frequently ask doctors do children outgrow food allergy. Yes, it might be possible that children along with adults can outgrow food allergies.

A food allergy is basically an immune response to the protein present in the food. A protein in known to be the most common allergic component of the food. These allergies occur in children when the body's immune system wrongly identifies a protein as harmful.

Allergic responses include dermatitis, gastrointestinal and respiratory distress, including some life-threatening anaphylactic responses  such as vasodilation and  biphasic anaphylaxis in children. This type of allergic reaction needs immediate interference.

Here are some important aspects regarding food allergies in children:

·         Research tells that there are 4-6% of infants and 1-2% of children who are diagnosed with food allergies in US.

·         Many infants are sensitive to specific foods. Allergic reactions to these foods may consist of wheezing, rash, diarrhea, or vomiting.

·         Food allergies that are  discovered in childhood may continue till adulthood

·         Some foods can commonly cause allergy in children. These foods include milk, soy, fish, shrimp, eggs, wheat, peanuts, and tree nuts. Out of which allergies to egg, milk, soy, and wheat are frequently outgrown.

·         If you find any symptoms of food allergies in your child, immediately consult your doctor for further treatment.

·         Food allergies are very uncommon in children and there are several methods of allergy testing for children. Skin-prick test and a blood test are commonly used for allergy testing.

·         In skin-prick test, small amounts of diluted food extracts are taken and are tested on the skin to see their reaction.

·         Blood tests are done to test for antibodies, which indicate there has been an allergic reaction.

·         The severity of reaction is also an important factor to know whether a child will outgrow a food allergy or not.

·         If the child’s reaction to eating specific food was hives or eczema, then there are more chances that this food allergy is going to be outgrown. If your child experiences danaphylaxis from eating the food, then there are less chances that the child will outgrow this allergy .

·         Some children experiences allergic symptoms from just smelling or touching the food; these kids are likely to be very sensitive, and there are less chances to outgrow the food allergy.

If your child outgrows any food allergy, there are different types of treatments that can help your child from the allergic reaction.

The first thing you can do is to avoid taking food that has been identified as allergens. If the food is accidentally ingested and allergenic reaction occurs, then epinephrine medicine can be used.

It is most beneficial if you take your child to the emergency room, where proper action can take place in presence of the doctor. Other medicines that can be used for treatment are antihistamines, epinephrine, and steroids.
