Allergy is basically a hyper sensitivity caused by the immune system. Anti allergic medicines are used to control it. There are many medicines which can control allergy of the body. Let’s focus on the common anti allergic medicines.
List of Common Anti Allergic Medicines
Antihistamines
- It is a drug known as anti-histamine. Anti histamines are used to cure allergic reactions.
- Antihistamines are combined with decongestants, and are freely present in the form of Actifed, Contac, Benadryl, Drixoral, Triaminic, and Tavist-D.
- You can get this drug in the form of Clarinex, Allegra, and Zetc
- This drug can also used in the form of nasal sprays and can treat allergic rhinitis like Astelin.
- Antihistamine is also present in the form of eye drops to treat itchy eyes, for e.g. Naphcon-A.
Decongestants
1. Decongestants can be present in the form of eye drops and help to decrease redness of the eyes due to conjunctivitis. For e.g. Albalon
2. Decongestants are working on the principle of inhibiting the blood flow through the restriction of blood vessels. This results in reduced swelling.
Corticosteroids
1. Itching and swelling are commonly known allergic reactions. Corticosteroids are used to reduce them.
2. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are used for allergic sinusitis and rhinitis. These are available in the form of Flonase, Rhinocort, Nasocort, Nasalide, Nasonex, etc.
3. Other types of topical corticosteroid creams are available to treat dermatitis, hives, and allergic reactions caused by insects.
4. Corticosteroids present in liquid forms can be used in severe cases of asthma.
Cromolyn Sodium / Nedocromil Sodium
- Both these are anti-inflammatory drugs present in the form of nasal spray and are used to treat allergic rhinitis.
- Cromolyn nasal spray is gentle in appearance, but effective for a few days only.
- Eye drop version of this medicine treats bloodshot and itchy eyes
- These are also used to treat asthma
- Nedocromil sodium is very effective in minimizing swelling
Epinephrine
1. Epinephrine is a type of antihistamine
2. It is used to treat the cases of insect bites
3. It is available as syringe injection
4. This drug helps to narrow blood vessels in the mucous secreting location and skin, and also upholds blood pressure bringing all the functions back to normal.
Fexofenadine
1. Fexofenadine is used in the treatment of hay fever and allergy symptoms such as running nose, tearing eyes, sneezing, etc.
2. Fexofenadine belongs to antihistamine type of medicine.
3. This allergy drug blocks the histamine i.e. substance that causes allergic symptoms.
4. This anti allergenic drug causes less sleepiness as compared to others.
5. Sometimes, it causes side effects like dizziness, headache, drowsiness or back pain.
6. Don’t consume alcohol while taking Fexofenadine
Cetrizine
- This anti allergic drug gives relief from seasonal allergy, hay fever, and allergy to dust mites, molds, animal dander, etc.
- It can also treat running nose, sneezing, tearing eyes, itchiness, etc.
- Cetrizine also blocks histamine, which causes allergic symptoms
- Cetrizine is available in tablet and syrup form
- Cetrizine may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, sore throat, etc.
