Types of Addictions

Addiction is the usage or consumption of a substance by being habituated to fulfill the psychological, behavioral and chemical changes in the body and mind. Addiction constitutes the overuse of an object or a chemical which has addiction inducing agents to trigger a wrong chemical reaction. It is mostly induced in the form of a drug like heroin or nicotine; but can be manifested in the form of modern modes of entertainment like television and internet. Addiction is manifested as an epidemic in the society hampering the mankind of its rational thinking and control of senses. Depending on the weakness of an individual, addiction is of following types:
- Addiction of smoking and drugs: Smoking is a practice which is exercised in the form of inhalation and exhalation of the chemical to be used in smoking. The chemical is ignited in the form of a cigarette and then inhaled into the lungs to exhale a small quantity with toxins already mixed with the blood. Smoking can be done in the following methods:
- Nicotine: It is an abusive drug which is addictive and carcinogenic by nature. It mixes with tar to get deposited on the surface of alveoli of lungs to block the exchange of gases in the body. Laboratory results have proved that the addiction of this drug is more intense then hashish and marijuana.
- Marijuana: This drug is obtained from the dry seeds and ashes of the plant Cannabis sativa which makes it one of the most harmful and fatal drug. This triggers the sites in the brain which monitor sense, taste and smell leaving the addict in hallucinations and a state of senselessness.
- Hashish: Another drug obtained from compressed trichomes of Cannabis. This instantaneously gives the addict a high. This is inhaled or orally consumed in the form of: vaporization, hot knives, single-toke utensils, dabous and mixtures.
- Addiction of alcohol: Alcohol addiction belongs to the family of liquids like beer, wine, whiskey that is obtained from fermented raisins or fruits. This compels men/women to drink alcohol irrespective of the individual’s choice and taste. It can be the result of an environmental or traumatic experience in the life of the bearer. The effects of alcohol have local as well as social consequences. Incessant talkativeness and dizziness are the moderate after effects of alcohol. It can be induced as a social or a group activity.
- Addiction of gambling: This type addiction is generally induced as a habit or a liking which gradually transforms into an addiction. The gamblers are unable to suppress their desire and craving for gambling even at the risk of financial status.
- Sedative addiction: Sedatives are drugs which slow down the activity of the body inducing slumber and relaxation in the patient. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are the two main sets of sedatives used currently by most of the addicts. This is used to lessen the anxiety and mental tension.
- Addiction of internet: This addiction includes the group of people who are habituated to surf internet for games, pornography, knowledge or chatting. This is the modern form of addiction which has engulfed the young generation. This results in loss of appetite and laziness.
- Food addiction: This is the irregular intake of food without the appetite or hunger. This is generally triggered due to psychological and mental breakdown and depression. But, it can be formed as an addiction in youngsters who develop habit of consuming food when they work or study. Food addiction is normally carried in the form of large amounts of sugar intake which in a long term leads to obesity and other cardiovascular diseases.
Numerous methods are available in the market to fight the fatal effects of any form of addiction. A rehabilitation center or a health organization is recommended to combat the effects of addiction.
