We all enjoy the benefits of Internet, and for most of us it is also an indispensible means for work, education and communication. While time spent on the internet could be hugely productive, for some people habitual internet use can interfere with their daily life including their work and relationships. If your children are addicted to one particular thing, then you must be wondering on how to treat addiction in children.

Internet nowadays is the most common addiction for most of the children. Internet addiction, also known as computer addiction, online addiction or internet addiction disorder, covers various impulse control problems, such as:

1.       Cybersex Addiction: Obsessive use of adult chat rooms, internet pornography, or adult fantasy role play sites, impact negatively on children.

2.       Cyber Relationship Addiction: Addiction to communal networking, chat rooms and messaging to the point where, online friends become more important than real life relationships with family.

3.       Information Overload: Compulsive database researching or web surfing leads to lower work productivity and less social interaction with family and friends.

The other common addiction in children is that of drugs. Children get easily overwhelmed and influenced as they are naive, less experienced and cocooned by us. Thus, they are easily victimized to the external pressures and create problem which hamper their physical and mental activity. You could regularly find changes in their attitudes in the form of lying, stealing, etc. Generally, we neglect and bypass the issue thinking it to be irrelevant and a one off case. Sometimes, you are unaware of how to handle the situation and turn aggressive and abusive towards your children which further complicates the problem.

What Makes Children Prone to Drug Addiction?

Children get involved in drugs due to pressure from friends, disaffection with parents due to their divorce and verbal or sexual abuse, bad performance in studies, etc. Parents create a lot of problems for their children by comparing them with others. Children also invariably get lured by various fashionable items that are available in the stores. So it becomes a point of status to show them off in their circles.

Treatment for Addiction in Children

Counseling for patient (children) and parent is necessary since mental, physical and social factors are involved. Antidote medicines can be easily given once the problem is detected. At times, the child is not affected to that extent and a few sessions of counseling and medication could work. Residential treatment can be given for severely addicted children. Here discussion and group counseling help children who seek emotional support. How to treat addiction in children is by far the main concern for any parent who loves their child the most and wants him/her to come out of this.

How to treat addiction in children can be best answered by recognizing the   cause of addiction in your children rather than abusing or beating them up once they get addicted to drugs or any other things. A change in personality, sleeping habits and diet, odor from cloth and mouth are all indications of an addiction in children.
