Acne is a very popular skin condition that is known to affect 90% of the people in the ages of 15-25 years. Pimples and acne are found to cause sever stress on teenagers especially. It is found that more and more teenagers opt to stay at home when they have acne attacks. With a great range of products flooding the market, a new research has revealed that acne outbreaks are more linked with presence of zinc in the diet. Thus, zinc acne refers to outbreaks of acne if there are deficiencies of zinc in the diet.
How zinc intake affects acne?
- Zinc is an important micronutrient for our body.
- It is found in whole grains, oats, dairy products, pumpkin seeds etc.
- Though the sources of zinc are many, yet our body absorbs onlo30-40% of the zinc and the rest of the zinc-complexes in the body get eliminated.
- Zinc is an important mineral regulating the production of more than 200 hormones in our body. As pimples, blemishes and acne are caused by hormonal imbalances, it can be wisely concluded that zinc supplements in the diet would regulate the production of these hormones, especially testosterones. This would in turn prevent further outbreak of acne and clear up the skin.
Zinc and acne
- Zinc is an important mineral used in protein synthesis in the body. Any deficiency of zinc would cause less synthesis of collagen and would also affect the healing process after attack of acne. Zinc supplements thus, are found to be as effective as the antibiotics prescribed by dermatologists in treating acne.
- Zinc salts are sold in the markets in three forms: Zinc gluconates, Zinc oxides and chelating zinc (zinc combined with amino acids).
- Zinc oxides are popular ingredients in skin creams which not only heal the acne but also prevent future outbreaks of pimples.
- Zinc gluconates are generally prescribed by the dermatologists and it is advisable to consume 200 milligrams of zinc orally.
- The best form of zinc which is easily absorbed by the body is the chelating zinc. They are complexed with an amino acid and is thus, most effective in clearing up the skin.
Zinc is now increasingly being prescribed by doctors and nutritionists because of the plethora of advantages it has pertaining to acne.
