The first thing that we notice about a person is his/her face. Appearance maybe deceptive for some, nevertheless people wish to make lasting “pleasing” impressions by their visage. More so, if you are a teenager or a young adult! But, what does your mirror proclaim in the morning? Acne and pimple spots!

The question arises: why does acne appear?

Science of acne

Our skin is made up of millions of pores. These pores are actually the ends of hair follicles which are deep inside the skin. Under these layers of skin, there are millions of sebaceous glands.

What do sebaceous glands do?

They produce oil called sebum which travel up the hair follicle and softens the skin surface keeping our skin supple and smooth.

Why do we get a pimple?

We get a pimple or an acne “break-out” when the pore of the skin gets clogged with sebum and dead cells. Generally, the sebum and dead cells are removed regularly from the skin surface. However, if the removal of dead cells and sebum does not occur, we have a clogged pore on the skin. Skin bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes may invade the pore. Our body’s immune system then sends a swarm of white blood cells there and causes inflammation of the pore. This condition on the skin is called acne or a pimple.

Why is there "pus" in my acne ?

As soon as pimple or acne appear on the skin, the pore appears pink and is tender to touch and often painful. Pus is the result of inflammation on the skin where our body’s white blood cells swarm around the clogged pore. The tip of the pimple soon develops pus.

Why does skin pore get clogged at all?

When there are hormonal imbalances, there is excess production of sebum. As a result, more and more sebum is produced and the skin pores get clogged. This is more seen when puberty occurs or during pregnancy. This clogged skin pore results in white head or a blackhead and in extreme inflammations: acne or pimple.

Why do I get whiteheads?

When a clogged pore appears as slight raised white spot on the skin, it is called as a whitehead. This clogged pore contains sebum, dead cells and trapped bacteria.

What are blackheads?

If the tip of the pore opens, then the melanin (skin pigment) mixed in the sebum reacts with the air on the surface. It oxidizes and turns into a black or brown color which we call as blackhead.

How shall I treat my acne?

Acne can be effectively treated by applying acne skin care creams. These topical applications of the cream can even remove the blemishes and scars left by the acne.
