Baby acne look like the normal acne does, more so with white heads and are mostly found on chin, forehead, cheek and even on the backs!
Science behind baby acne
The actual reason behind baby acne is not very clear. It is believed that the mother’s hormones might have crossed over the placenta, getting inside the baby’s system. This hence, stimulates the skin of the baby and we often see pimple or whitehead like appearance on the skin of the baby.
Another reason attributed to baby acne is the overproduction of oils in the body of the baby as his lungs grow and expand while he/she is inside the body of the mother.
Whiteheads in baby
These pimples appear like white heads and may last for three to four weeks in the baby. They appear to grow larger when the baby is most fussy and his/her stomach is gassy. As a result of blood rushing on the surface, the baby acne becomes more prominent.
How long does baby acne last?
Most of the cases of baby acne last till the baby is three to six months. Most of the baby acne does no extend beyond six months. If they are found to be hanging more than six months, it is better to seek the advice of the doctor.
How to treat baby acne?
It is advisable to gently wipe the face and acne prone areas of the baby with a soft wet cloth. One must avoid scrubbing the body of the baby and applying thick creams and oils. They may only aggravate the condition of acne in the baby.
- Baby acne is different from adult acne and this skin condition gradually recedes as the baby grows. Medication and topical application of creams which are effective on adult skin should be avoided in baby acne.
- Doctors recommend baby friendly and non allergic detergent powders to wash the baby’s clothes and sheets on which the bay is laid. Baby acne is known to get aggravated in the presence of rough clothes.
