Many have the impression that acne or pimples affect the young people of 15-25 years. However, it is found that one out of every five women from 30-45 years of age, get acne outbreaks which is called adult acne. But, what is adult acne?
Adult acne is the acne outbreaks on the faces, chest and backs of adults and has all the stages of teenage acne. Adult acne begins with clogging of the skin pores because of excess production of oil and the dead skin cells. Soon, a skin bacterium attacks the clogged pore and in self-defense, the white blood cells of the body surround the pore. This causes inflammation of the pore and that skin condition is acne or papule. It is characterized by swelling on the skin, pink or discoloration of the skin and is often painful to touch.
Why does acne have pus?
Soon, pus begins to accumulate at the tip of the papule and it becomes a pustule, comprising of dead white blood cells, dead bacterial cells, clogged sebum and other skin debris. Thus, the acne gets a pushead.
Why do adults have acne?
- Same as the case of teenage acne, adults get acne as a result of hormonal imbalance. Pregnancy is a major factor where hormonal imbalances in a woman occurs. Apart from pregnancy, menopause also triggers acne outbreak in women.
- Men who have been taking corticosteroid medicines due to certain medical conditions also get acne attacks.
- Heredity is found to be a common factor causing adult acne. If your mother got acne at the age of 45, you are likely to get them.
Treatment of adult acne
- Adult acne can be effectively treated by some good quality skin creams that not only reduce the scars of the acne but also prevent new outbursts of pimples.
- Apart from them, adults with such sensitive skins should avoid abrasive granular scrubs, thick skin creams that may block or irritate the skin pores.
- Gentle cleansers should be used to clean up the skin.
- Over-the-counter creams that contain salicylic acids or benzoyl peroxides can be used on the pimples and the affected areas to clear up the skin.
- If the acne attack is sever, it is advisable to see a dermatologist who can recommend a holistic approach to treat the acne problem.
