Acne treatment is the most sought after medication because acne affects more than 90% of people especially in the ages between 15-25 years. It is also a myth that acne affects only the teenagers. Acne occurs in adults also and is a cause of despair. One of the most effective methods to treat acne is to use mediated acne face washes, body gels and pimple creams that contain salicylic acid for acne treatment.

How does salicylic acid treat acne?

Salicylic acid and a related acid called glycolic acid is a mild diluted acid which slowly removes the dead cells of the skin and thus evenly tones up the skin. It does not kill the skin bacteria that inflame the clogged pores nor does it reduce the amount of sebum that is produced. It just sloughs off the dead cells that are clogging the skin pores and dries up the acne.

Acne treatment with salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is very effective in acne treatment as it has keratolytic properties. Its application should be continued for a thorough and permanent affect. As soon as one stops using products containing salicylic acid, it is found that the skin soon becomes uneven and clogged skin pores reappear! One can easily purchase acne creams containing salicylic acid, as they are available over-the-counter without a prescription.

Salicylic acid and acne- side-effects

Salicylic acid is known to cause scalping and drying of the skin. If the skin is found to be very allergic and even peeling, then this acid must not be reapplied. In order to avoid such skin reactions, it is advisable to apply the acne product containing salicylic acid sparingly and maybe, on alternate days.

Salicylic acid and acne- precautions

  • One must avoid using rough abrasives and cleansers while using salicylic acid on the skin.
  • Avoid alcohol based products.
  • It is better to seek doctor’s advice if a patient is planning to get pregnant and is using salicylic acid for acne treatment.
  • One must use skin care products that do not contain more than 2% concentration of salicylic acid in it.

Popular skin care acne products contain a combination of salicylic acid and glycolic acids which not only treat the acne but also reduce the acne scars.
